Retaining wall installation in New Jersey

Segmental block, boulder and stone retaining walls built to hold the grade for decades — compacted base, drainage stone backfill, geogrid where it's needed and a clean capped finish.

Why New Jersey retaining walls lean — and how we build them instead

A retaining wall is a drainage structure first and a block wall second. Most failed walls we get called to replace in Barnegat, Manahawkin and Forked River were set on unprepared soil and backfilled with the same dirt that was dug out, so every rain loads the wall with water it can't shed. We excavate a proper trench, compact base stone, set the first course dead level, backfill with clean stone and filter fabric, run drain pipe to daylight, and add geogrid reinforcement on taller walls. It costs a little more the first time and it doesn't move afterward.

  • Segmental block retaining walls, straight runs, curves and tiers
  • Boulder and natural stone walls for slopes and waterfront grade changes
  • Repair and rebuild of leaning, bulging or failed walls
  • Block and stone steps, seating walls and terraced planting beds
  • Drainage stone, filter fabric and pipe to daylight on every wall
  • Geogrid reinforcement and engineered designs on taller walls

Our process

Four steps, no shortcuts

  1. 01

    Grade and drainage check

We look at how the slope moves water, what the wall has to hold back, and whether height triggers engineering or a township permit.

  2. 02

    Excavate and compact the base

Trench below grade, remove soft soil, then place and compact base stone so the first course sits level and stays level.

  3. 03

    Build with drainage behind it

Block set and locked course by course, clean stone backfill, filter fabric, drain pipe to daylight and geogrid where the load requires it.

  4. 04

    Cap, backfill and clean up

Adhesive-set cap course, topsoil and seed or mulch behind the wall, and the site raked clean before we pull out.

Retaining wall questions we get every week

How much does a retaining wall cost in New Jersey?
Price is driven by wall height, length, block type and how much excavation, base stone and backfill drainage the slope needs. Most residential walls in Ocean County are quoted by the square face foot after we see the grade — we measure on site and hand you a written number.
How tall can a retaining wall be without an engineer?
In most New Jersey townships, walls under about four feet can be built without a stamped engineered design, and taller or tiered walls need engineering and often a permit. We tell you which category your wall falls into before you commit to anything.
Why do retaining walls fail here?
Almost always water and base. Walls built straight on soft soil with dirt backfill and no drainage push out and lean within a few seasons. We build on compacted base stone, backfill with clean drainage stone and filter fabric, and add geogrid where the load calls for it.
Can you repair or rebuild a leaning wall?
Yes. We take the wall down, correct the base and drainage that caused the failure, and reset the block. Salvaging existing block is often possible and keeps the cost down.
Are you insured for wall and excavation work?
Yes. BW Seasonal Property Maintenance LLC is a registered New Jersey LLC carrying general liability coverage, and we send a certificate of insurance on request before a machine comes on your property.
